Dawson Creek

Gramps and Storm at the Welcome to B.C. sign

This town is Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. And the beginning of the properly epic part of this trip.

The Alaska Highway was built during World War II in just 10 months. The 2,700 kms (1700 miles) is runs through the scenic mountains of Northern BC, the Yukon, and southern Alaska, resulting in over 100 bridges being needed.

I fully expected to see some epic sweeps of road down deep ravines and up through mountain passes. It has not disappointed.

I sighted a bear crossing the road, and a small herd of bison lounging on both sides of the highway as it passed through a shady glen.

Yup, that’s a bear

Overall though, I haven’t seen a lot of wildlife, but what is visible to me is beautiful to see.

The landscape is also quite lovely. I would rate this very high on my list of motorcycle-friendly roads. It’s not super twisty like the Smoky Mountains, or have big sky vistas like the Icefields Parkway. But the roads have enough curves and smooth corners to keep the riding technically interesting, while allowing you time to safely take in the beautiful scenery as you ride through.

The first day on the Alaska Highway ends in Fort Nelson, BC
